Chapter 14

I knew Mary was coming over so my internal clock made me wake up at some ungodly hour. I walked over to the window and saw the sun was just starting to rise. I took in a deep breath and smiled at the beautiful view. The rays of the sun stretched over everything in its path, causing the shadows to reach out and grab the dusty ground.

Kal was fast asleep so I decided to make coffee and sit outside. I quietly went downstairs and looked through his cabinets. Finally I found ground up coffee beans and the pot. In a few minutes I had figured his little metal pot out and the coffee started to brew.

I walked outside with the steaming cup in my hand and took a seat on the porch. Kal had no chairs but I didn’t mind. A cool breeze made my hair blow softly against my shoulders, causing my whole body to shiver. The golden and red leaves danced in front of me and a few small birds chirped in the distance. I took in the smells of dirt, moss, and water and a calm came over me. I knew that I was ready to face whatever punishment my parents were going to give me.

The door creaked open and I felt two large arms hug me from behind.

“Hi beautiful,” said Kal sitting down and pulling me into his warm body.

“Hey Kal,” I said, my voice sounding quiet but confident.

“Thanks for the coffee,” he said taking a sip out of his cup.

“You’re welcome; I thought warm coffee would be a nice thing to wake up to.”

“Nope,” he said, setting down the cup, “You’re the best thing I’ve woken up to.” He kissed the top of my head and pulled me closer to his chest. There was practically no space between us. Kal and I seemed to be molded together as one and I loved it.

“You’re sweet Kal,” I said, scratching his arm gently.

He chuckled and kissed me again. We sat in silence for a while until we heard small footsteps approaching us. Mary greeted us with a smile.

“Hey guys, you look comfy. Let’s talk inside.”

All of us walked inside and Mary took a seat the kitchen table. I sat down across from her while Kal looked through the fridge.

“Are omelets okay guys?” he asked.

We both nodded and he proceeded to take out the large slab of bacon. Even uncooked, it looked and smelled delicious.

“Mary I’m so sorry do you want coffee?” I said quickly getting up.

“Sure, I haven’t had it in years.”

I poured her a cup with cream and placed in front of her. I then slid her a small container of sugar and a spoon.

She sighed, mixing the coffee slowly and staring at the cup. There was a brief moment of silence before she finally spoke.

“Kal already knows the story so I’ll just tell you now and get it over with.”

I could see kal stiffen for a second before continuing his cooking.

“We wanted the fighting to be over with more than anything so a few years ago Jason and I decided to move back.
